Tuesday, 21 September 2010 07:38 - Reason vs. Fruity Loops - Which is better?

Hey guys! Today I'm going to talk about my views on the differences between Reason and Fruity Loops. There are tons of people who will side with either piece of software and swear by it no matter what. Maybe your Friend has one or the other and that convinced you to go one direction or the other, or maybe you read reviews in magazines and online and that's what formed your opinion. I have had the pleasure of using both for a number of years and here is my take on each program. Enjoy!

Reason

Reason is great in the fact that it is like having a whole studio of rack-mount gear at your fingertips. You can add as many compressors, EQ, synth modules and various other types of gear and never have to worry about running out. The only limitation is the amount of processing power your computer has. It's a cool concept to start with and it's very appealing to someone who wants to own a full studio but doesn't have the money or space to hold the bulky, energy and space consuming units. I first picked up a copy of this because another guy in my crew had been using it for quite awhile, so I decided to dedicate some time to it.

First off the interface is unique. When I first got it even I was amazed at the idea of having endless gear at my fingertips. I made quite a few unsuccessful beats on Reason before I made something that was even close to good enough to show someone. As far as the sound goes, it's a little harsh and digital. I know what you're saying, "It's a program, of coarse it's digital.", but bare with me while I explain. It's both a good and a bad thing that the sound engine is so unforgiving. The bad is you have to spend hours getting things to sound the way you like, kicks and snares as well as samples and synth need a lot of work and fine tuning to get them to sound the way you like. After awhile of messing with it (I mean years), I finally got down a routine on how to set things up the way I like them and was able to get the sound that I wanted. It is a pain in the ass when you first start out, being nothing really sounds great and it can be discouraging. The good, like I mentioned, is you really learn the "gear" and what each piece is good for.

Another thing I don't like about Reason is the fact it doesn't support VST's in any way unless you rewire it to another program such as Fruity Loops or Pro Tools. This can be a pain when you know there are so many good soft synth's out on the market and you don't really have a way to use them. To make up for this fact, you can get a number of refills for the different samplers and patches for the synth units. People spend a lot of time programming them and there are some really good ones. I found that I ended up with a lot more refills than I really actually found a use for. I also realized that the whole "virtual gear" thing was sort of redundant. I feel you move to computers for ease of use, so I don't see the point of having a program with a bunch of fake rack mount gear in it. It's kinda silly if you really think about it.

All in all, it's a good program and it gets the job done. It takes time to get used to the gear and how to properly configure each unit, but once you do, you can take that knowledge to almost any piece of real hardware and feel at ease setting it up and using it. There is still a place in my heart for Reason and I ended up making a lot of really good (and bad) beats on it.

Moving on...............

Fruity Loops

I have used this longer, and that might be part of the reason I tend to like it more. I started out with Fruity Loops in high school, so I have about 8 years total worth of exposure to this program. I know a lot of people give it a bad time because of the name, and I also admit the name is a little, well, fruity. But I feel it is a more complete piece of software, so let me explain.

First of all, the sound is already warm and smooth. It does take time to get everything dialed in to where you want it, but not as long as Reason. That alone makes it easier to work on, because you hear results much faster than you would in Reason.

Another thing I like is it supports VST's, and I love VST's. I have almost 100 different types from synth to effects and so on. You can find a whole slough of free ones online, and some of them are actually really good! I have ran across a few crappy ones, but those are easy enough to get rid of, and you never know what you will find if you don't look and try. There are only a few that didn't work for me, I didn't investigate why, I just moved on.

A down side I've noticed with Fruity Loops is this, when you are rewired into Pro Tools it won't export the beat along with the track. Reason on the other hand would bounce the beat along with the rest of the mix. I don't know if I set it up wrong, but I don't like that very much. I guess it couldn't all be good.

Fruity Loops is also pretty easy to navigate and this makes the work flow go much faster. The samples are on the left, you have your sequencer and everything else is right there for you. You can also find a ton of tutorials that cover a vast variety of topics for all kinds of music, just like they have for Reason.

It is also only available as of now for PC's and I believe it is also compatible with the new Mac's that use Intel chips. I don't use Mac, and I never have, so I don't really bother learning that much about that aspect of plug-ins and programs.

All in all, I just like Fruity Loops better because I am more comfortable with it. The rest of my crew all use Reason, and they also swear by it. They also all use Mac, so the shoe might be on the other foot if they used PC, but who knows.

I choose Fruity Loops any day, hands down. I still have Reason, but I haven't used it or even opened it for about 6 months or more. I just don't use it enough and I don't like it enough to give it another shot, at least not yet.

Like I mentioned, I prefer Fruity Loops 8 over Reason 4. I might change again soon, but I don't really see a need to. To each his own I suppose.

Hope this helps you out a little bit. Leave comments and ask me questions, I know quite a bit and I'm here to help.

Take Care!

Get more Exposure to your Music with Social Media

Advertising your band or music group through social media is a great way to get your music out to the world. Twitter, facebook, and myspace have millions of users that use the site consistently. Twitter is one of my favorites for marketing because its so easy to spread the word about what your doing or whatever you seem to be talking about.

Facebook: When you create a facebook account, create a customized profile that has an interesting biography about yourself or the music group. Talk about your interests, relate with the audience, talk about how you began making or producing music. Once you do that, you can send friend requests to people that have a similar taste in music. You can also create support groups that represent your band and invite your friends to join your group. This is a great way to establish an audience, and most of the time people that you invite to your facebook group will join and support your band. If your making beats and you want to promote your beats, facebook works really well for this as well.

Twitter: Create a twitter profile with a theme that relates with what your band is about, the more personal you make your profile the more interesting it will be. Once your account is setup, you can follow people that share similar interests in music and they will follow you back. Every day or every few days, update your fans with what songs your working on, updates for your debut cd or new cd release. Tell them something funny, and connect with your musical audience. Twitter is a great platform that allows content to go viral very quickly simply by word of mouth and retweeting.

Having a website allows your band or music group to have a much more professional appeal, and it also helps to make your music seem more exclusive. A website officiates everything and allows you to present your band to the world on your own terms. Websites are cheap to host and are very easy to build so its important that you take advantage of the benefits. You could even setup a shopping cart on your website where you can sell your songs for a dollar. This can really help you raise money for your band if you can learn how to send a significant amount of traffic to your website.

Tuesday, 21 September 2010 07:22 - Top Best Selling Beats Websites for Music Producers

If you are a serious producer, you have more than likely considered selling your beats online. The problem is, where should you sell your beats online?

There are a handful of sites that will off you your own online "store" to shop your beats in exchange for a cut of your profits. Which ones are best?

Before I get into reviews, let me first say that I am an avid believer utilizing every avenue you can to promote your beats. So even though some of these beat selling websites are a little sub-par in certain areas, I'd advise that you use them anyway for the sake of promotion.

Here are a few beat selling websites that I have had experience with online:

MyBeatShop.com: MyBeatShop has been the most valuable beat-selling website in my experiences. I've made thousands selling beats online from this website alone. It is easy and quick to upload beats, I've always been paid on time, and it offers a nice community of producers to interact with. There are beat battles for cash/no cash and all-time and monthly rankings for sales, battles, etc.

Now for the bad parts: The customer service is horrible. It is impossible to reach the staff by telephone because their phone inbox is always full. The site design is ugly - looks very amateurish. The site takes 20% per sale as a commission AND charges for online beat space. This is a bit much considering how many beats they sell. Oh and did I mention the customer service is horrible? Oh I did? Well that's cool 'cause it deserves to be mentioned twice.

Despite a lot of bad areas, at the end of the day this site has made me a lot of money selling beats online, so I definitely suggest you check it out and get your beats on it!

RocBattle.com: RocBattle is probably one of the first, if not THE first beat-selling website for producers to shop their beats online. A lot of producers have had a ton of success selling beats on this website.

The site is a lot nicer looking than most other beat-selling websites. The design and graphics/artwork look a LOT more professional than, say, MyBeatShop. It is very simple to upload beats to the site, and the upload time is quick. You can also order your beats after you upload them which is, to me at least, a very valuable tool.

Battling your beats is a big part of the website (hence the name RocBattle of course). You can select any one of your beats to battle against a beat from another producer. It is important to participate in battles, as it increases your song plays and exposure and can drive you up in the rankings if you are able to win a lot. These things will ultimately help to contribute toward the ultimate goal - more sales.

The bad part about RocBattle, at least in my experience, is that it seems a lot harder to sell beats on than MyBeatShop unless you are very active, win a lot of battles, or lower your prices to next to nothing. There is a lot of competition, and it is a bit more difficult to get recognition unless you earn it through battling and establishing a reputation. Overall though a very nice site that is definitely worth your efforts to sell beats online!

ThBeatTrader.com: TheBeatTrader charges $2.00 per "online beat space," which I believe is a bit overpriced. The site design isn't the absolute worst, but it is still pretty amateur looking. They don't have nearly as big as a community as MyBeatShop or RocBattle, and it seems a lot harder to be "in the spotlight" on this site. Again, I've had very minimal success on this site, so unless you plan on doing a lot of direct marketing yourself, don't expect a ton of sales.

BeatSwagger.com: I only put a few beats on this site, because the site design makes it seem, well....a bit shady. There's really not much to say about the site, except the design sucks, the site content is minimal to none, and I only got one sale on it. But hey...one sale is better than none, right? So what the hell...sign up anyway!

Those are the main beat-selling sites that I've had some experiences with. Again, even though some of the sites are a bit lacking, I can't stress enough that it is not a bad idea at all to sign up anyway for exposure and promotional purposes. These little things can go a long way in establishing yourself as a producer in the online community and selling your beats online!

Tuesday, 21 September 2010 07:15 - What is a VST? Music Production

What is a VST?

VST stands for “Virtual Studio Technology”, and are basically software plug ins you can use with program such as FL Studio. There are many VST instruments and VST effects available, some of which you need to purchase, and some of which are free.

VSTs can be controlled like any other patch or sound in FL studio. You can think of them as FL Keys for example [...]
- you can control them with your midi keyboard, computer keyboard, or mouse, and alter almost all the parameter knobs, as if you had some sort of hardware in front of you. It is really just virtual hardware.

VSTs have become popular because a lot of them produce a higher quality sound than the stock Fruity
Loop sounds, or sounds of other programs. It is also usually cheaper than buying the hardware.

VSTs have changed the face of music production - you can have an arsenal of powerful sounds all loaded up into one interface. Companies and individuals make new VSTs everyday, and the possibilities are really endless.

Where to Find VSTs

Free VSTs

Many websites offer free VSTs. These are usually not as good as the VSTs you can buy, however you may find an effect or instrument you really like.

You can also goto your local guitar center, they usually have some.

Some of my favorite VSTs are Toxic Biohazard, Albino 3, Edirol Orchestral, and Edirol Super Quartet, be sure to check em out, a lot of VSTs allow you to try a demo version before buying. Have fun!
