FL Studio Tutorial: The Basics Part III - Understanding and Using the Piano Roll PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator - PAV

This tutorial will teach you how to use the Fruity Loop piano roll

Now that you know how to make a basic drum beat, you need to learn how to make melodies.

The piano roll shows you which notes are playing and how long they are playing. You can also view/change the velocity [...]
of the notes, the panning, and the volume.

To bring up the piano roll you can either right click a sample in your channel window and click piano roll, or just hit F7.

Piano roll can be used with any sample in the channel window - (it does not have to be a piano as the name might imply.)

There are many different methods to “making sounds” with the patches or samples

  1. You can connect a midi keyboard and play the notes from there
  2. You can use your computer keyboard to play the notes
  3. And clicking around the piano roll and “drawing” the notes

Recording with a Midi Keyboard or Qwerty Keyboard

To record the sounds you make with a midi keyboard or qwerty keyboard, all you have to do is hit the record button which is at the top right next to the stop button. It is highlighted in red below

Once you hit that, you might get a window showing asking you how you want to record. I usually select “Automation and Score” when I want to record to the piano roll.

The record button should be orange now, and that means that next time you hit play, Fruity Loops will record everything you play into the piano roll for the instrument you selected. If you hit play while you have pattern playback selected, the recording will stop at the end of the pattern - but if you hit play while you have song playback selected you can play indefinitely.

What you record is not permanent - you can always go back and edit what you have in the piano roll. This is explained below

“Drawing” and Editing Patterns

First I will talk about drawing patterns. This technique is extremely easy. First make sure you have the paintbrush or pencil selected. Now all you have to do is click somewhere in the piano roll, and a box will be made. The box represents a note. You can drag it anywhere, and also extend or shorten its length. You can also slice, select specific notes, zoom, playback or select snap settings - these options are all available at the top bar of the piano roll. You should be able to find each of these (if you put your mouse over any of them it will say what it is in the top left of the program) They are highlighted in blue below.

Velocity

You can change the velocity of each note (how hard it hits/loudness) with the little bars at the bottom, they are highlighted in orange above.

Each line corresponds to a specific note (shortening a bar makes lowers the velocity and lengthening a bar increases velocity.) This can be useful when humanizing your drums, or making ghost hits. You can also use this to make a series of notes fade out.

Also Note: If the right click the area to the left, you can pick what you want the bars to represent. They can also be used to edit attributes such as panning, volume, and pitch.

Cool Piano Roll Features

Here are some interesting things in the piano roll you may not have known. There are definitely more, and I have limited this section to discuss only a few.

Piano Roll Slide

You can make notes slide from one note to another (like a guitar or bass in real life) by using the button highlighted in yellow below:

You have to have that selected, before you make the note to make that note slide.

Chords

Fruity Loops has a bunch of preset chords you can choose from. Just hit the upside down triangle button (highlighted in green in the images above), and then go to chord. You will see a list of chords you may choose from. Once you select one (for ex. Major), once you draw a note in the piano roll a chord will show up. If you want to make single notes again you would have to go back to the chord menu and hit “None”.

Arpegiatte

You can arpegiatte chords automatically with FL Studio as well. Arpegiatte means to play each note of a chord separately, or in sequence. To do this, select a chord (it will be in red once selected), and then hit the tools button (its the wrench left of the pencil tool). You could also just hit Alt + A when the chord has been selected.

Quantize

Sometimes when you record from a keyboard, your notes may be off time. You can do a quick fix by quantizing. To do this, select what you want to fix and hit Ctrl+Q. Ofcourse, this is not perfect, but it can help you save some time when editing your recording.

Thats it for now! Play around with the piano roll, there is so much you can do with it. If you have questions feel free to ask. If you want to see me using the piano roll (i also explain a lot of the things in this tutorial), please view this post and watch the video: FL

5 Ways Increase Traffic To Your Music Myspace or Soundclick PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator - PAV
Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:51

Here are some really simple ways to increase your traffic significantly [...]

  1. Use Youtube

A great way to increase traffic is to post a sample(s) of your work on Youtube. Make sure you have chosen an appropriate title and keywords so people can find your video. The people who watch your video will most probably be part of your target audience because they searched for the keywords that brought your video up, or were looking at similar videos. Always leave a link to your page so that they could visit and hear your other work, or view your offers.

  2. Post on Relevant Forums

Forums are one of the best ways to increase traffic to your site. There are countless forums about hip hop, rap, producing, and just music in general, where you can post your work and discuss it with other people. You can also post your music for review on these forums - and they will usually give you an honest opinion about what they think of your work. You can also build relationships on these forums with other producers, or even build relationships with your target audience or clients.

  3. Give Out Something for Free

Who doesn’t want something for free? If you’ve got professional beats, and you occasionally give one out for free, people will come to your page and seize the opportunity. If you keep changing it up also, they will continue coming back to see what the new free beat is. They might hear your other tracks and buy some, or simply create publicity for you and raise your ranking. If you are an artist who doesn’t sell beats (raps or sings on your own tracks or others’) you can give something else out for free - for example a few shirts or a few tickets to your next gig.

  4. Work With Other Artists

If you want to get your beats or production heard, my advice is to find a local artist that has potential and to work with them. A lot of people do not like listening to just instrumentals, and usually like songs more when there are vocals on them as well. Put someone on a hot track, and then advertise that track somehow with both your names on it (perhaps with some of the methods above). People may hear it and think to themselves - “Wow the beat in this song is amazing, I wonder who made it”, or “This is how I want my tracks to sound, I better get in contact with who produced it”. Make sure they know you made the beat (have a link somewhere to your page), and make sure the track is great, or else it may end up hurting you.

  5. Add The Right Friends

This is most applicable to myspace. Too many times people fall into the trap of friend blasting everyone and their mothers. The problem with blind friend blasting is that you may never reach your target audience. Also half of the people you add may be bots anyways. You need to target your demographic. When people like what they hear, they will come back for more. For example, if you make mainstream beats, add people who comment on mainstream artists myspace pages. You can go even further and add the people who comment on the artist’s pictures, because bots don’t do that- they usually just comment on the main page. Once you start finding your audience, they will start finding you - people will like what they hear and tell their friends.

I hope these tips will help you get more people to your music pages. These are only 5 ideas, and there are defnately so many more methods to increase traffic. If you have more suggestions please add them as comments to help others.

Fruity Loops (FL Studio) Product Review PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 12 May 2009 19:11

Fruity Loops has been a long time fave of CleverJoe's. This superb software has evolved over the last few years from a 'cool and quirky' drum machine and electronica pattern generator into a monolithic musician's tool. Fruity Loops is very easy to use so you won't get bogged down in the software. Allowing creativity to flow freely is something that Fruity Loops has always been good at.

Fruity Loops can be used on its own as a complete package, or in combination with a digital recording program like Cakewalk, Cubase, etc. Complex songs and sweet drum loops can be created with a few clicks, and the resulting song or loop can be exported to a WAV or MP3 file, and MIDI can be exported to a standard MIDI file.

Although FL can be used as a complete, stand-alone package, it's also easy to use with other music software including Cakewalk, Cubase, etc. CleverJoe uses Fruity Loops to create the drum track beds for songs he's working on, then exports the tracks as WAV files. The WAV files are then imported into Cakewalk Pro Audio, which is his main digital recorder. Apparently FP can also be synched to external sequencers but it's very easy to simply export the file as a WAV or mp3 and then import it into another program if you want to.

There are a wide range of pro quality effects at your disposal including reverb, phaser, flanger etc. Complex mixing chains can be created with ease. It's loads of fun to just screw around and try different combinations of effects. You can get pretty freaky, which of course is one of the joys of Fruity Loops. CleverJoe likes to get freaky. For years, Fruity Loops has long been known and loved as a 'secret gem' within the electronica musician community. Today FP has become much more widely known, and the improved features of this version are truly a dream. The most complete virtual studio currently available, you will be creating wav, mp3 or midi songs or loops only minutes after launching it.

For the record, although another user mentioned that he had trouble registering his product for the lifetime upgrade, CleverJoe didn't have any trouble at all and has never heard of anyone else having trouble either. Joe found customer service to be second to none, and the legions of musicians who swear by Fruity Loops can't be wrong.

This software should definitely be included in your arsenal of music software. CleverJoe gives it three big thumbs up! MIDI files.
